Hello, and welcome back to this blog post! Today I am going to be going over eyeshadow and different types of them + included application level! Surprisingly most people only know of powder eyeshadow, but there are actually a lot more and I’m here to break it down for you!
Liquid Eyeshadow
Liquid eyeshadow is perfect for those looking to find something easy to apply but at the same time want lots of pigment! I tried liquid eyeshadow for the first time borrowing my mom’s makeup and I actually really love it. It’s perfect for when I’m in a rush but want to add a pop of color to my look.
The big difference I’ve noticed with liquid foundation compared to powdered is the pigment! The pigment is a lot more vibrant and noticeable when I’m using liquid eyeshadow. The only thing I don’t like about liquid eyeshadows is how it stings. I don’t know why but every liquid eyeshadow I’ve tried has stung my eyes. Maybe it’s just the formula but wanted to mention that for those with sensitive skin!
Application-level: Easy
Cream Eyeshadow
Cream Eyeshadow is a type of liquid eyeshadow but just has a creamier base! This is perfect for those who are going for a subtle look, as cream eyeshadows aren’t as pigmented as liquid eyeshadows. This type of eyeshadow is also perfect for those with dry skin! Cream Eyeshadow also has a pretty long-lasting finish.
Application-level: Easy
Powder Eyeshadow
This type of eyeshadow is the most common, powder eyeshadow! Powder eyeshadow is best for those who want to do a makeup look that contains a lot of shades/colors. You can wear this type of eyeshadow with a moisturized and primed base for the best results of durability and color.
Application-level: Varies
Loose Glitter Eyeshadow
Loose glitter eyeshadow is very messy! If you’ve ever seen the MAC bottles full of a glittery substance this is it! I tried this type of eyeshadow out a few months ago for the first time and while they are incredibly pigmented it’s messy so watch out!
This is the perfect type of eyeshadow for those who love glittery eyeshadow. They work as amazing highlighters too! Loose glitter eyeshadow is great for dramatic makeup looks. Glitter eyeshadow should always have a base, that base can be eye primer. Without a base, you’re risking getting the eyeshadow everywhere!
It’s important that you are very careful when using glitter eyeshadow. Make sure never inhale it, never apply it on your waterline, don’t rub your face when it’s on, and never give it to kids. When you’re removing this type of eyeshadow off make sure to use a cotton round with an oil-based makeup remover. You can gently remove the makeup like that. A normal cleanser or some water won’t properly remove this.
The reason why it’s important to be cautious when wearing loose glitter eyeshadow is that it could aggravate/scratch your cornea, which is in your eye. This can lead to corneal irritation and even infection, and it’s important for those with contact lenses to be extra cautious!
Application-level: Medium
Stick Eyeshadow
Stick eyeshadow is another easy way to apply eyeshadow. Stick eyeshadow is an alternative to powder eyeshadow and is overall a lot easier to use. It’ll give you a beautiful finish in no time! This is perfect for beginners in makeup, and it’s a perfect option for those on the go.

Eye crayon Stick
Eye crayon sticks are another variation for eyeshadow sticks but they are used to define, shape, and enhance your eyes. When dried they appear as a powdery finish. Another type of eyeshadow that’s quick and easy for beginners to use!
