Today I am going to be going over 10 makeup tips that are useful for beginners! If you are just getting into makeup and need direction, this blog post will help you. I remember when I first started with makeup two years ago and these tips are things I wish I would’ve known when starting!

1. Start Fresh
Before applying any makeup do your skincare routine! This is a necessity, and it’s always a good idea to wash your face. I like to use a gentle cleanser, but it’s up to you what to use! After washing your face, you can follow up with your skincare routine.
2. Use Primer or a product that helps before makeup!
Primer, you’ve probably heard of this product when watching makeup tutorials. If you don’t know what primer is, it essentially is a product that will fill the pores, bumpy textures, and small creases to make your skin smoother and easier to work with makeup! It will also make your foundation and concealer easier to apply.
Another alternative would be facial spray, I like using this before my makeup. Facial sprays are also great to apply before dewy makeup looks or on a no-makeup day when your skin needs a little pick me up! They keep your skin hydrated and refreshed looking. I recommend the Heritage store facial spray, it smells like lavender too!
Also for these products let them sit on your skin for 5 minutes then you can go in with the makeup. This is because you don’t want the products mixing and the finish might not be as good!
These are the products I recommend:

Here are my primer recommendations, depending on your skin needs I have a few! I love elf products because they are cheap and work well. So these primers are all e.l.f.!
Poreless Putty Primer: This one works great with normal, dry, or combination skin! The skin benefit of this product is that it will hydrate your skin!
Matte Putty Primer: This product works great with oily skin since this will mattify your appearance!
Luminous Putty Primer: This one also works great with normal, dry, or combination skin! The skin benefit of this product is that it will illuminate and plump your skin!
3. Don’t use makeup wipes
Now, I know how tempting it can be especially after a long day to use makeup wipes to remove your makeup but it’s best to not use them because it’s especially harmful to your skin! Makeup wipes ruin your acid mantle, this is a layer of your skin that is sensitive and it keeps your skin’s moisture in while keeping junk out. The acid mantle helps with protecting your skin from bacteria, viruses, and other germs.
Alternatives that are gentler on your skin compared to makeup wipes would be:
Micellar Water: This product tones your skin while cleansing it and helping with keeping your skin clear too. Some other benefits would be removing dirt and oil, and helping your skin stay hydrated! Micellar water works with all skin types, this also includes sensitive skin.
La Roche-Posay Micellar Cleansing Water for Sensitive Skin
Gentle Cleanser: I prefer this way, I don’t wear tons of makeup so a simple gentle cleanser is what works for me! If you wear little to no makeup normally then this is a good option. Bonus tip: while your skin is still wet dry your skin with reusable cotton rounds or a washcloth to remove the excess makeup. I love this cleanser, it removes makeup really well and has really helped my acne! I even wrote a full review for it, here it is if you want to find out more!
La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser, Face Wash for Normal to Dry Sensitive Skin, Oil-Free
Cleansing Balms: This is a great option if you like to wear a lot of makeup and want to take it off quickly and easily. You can use these daily and they don’t leave your skin feeling dry or stripped of it’s natural oils!
4. Exfoliate Your Lips
Exfoliating your lips before applying lipstick removes dead skin cells and it also can help with applying lipstick evenly. This can also help with making your lips looks plumper, you can do this once a week!
Quick and easy lip scrub recipe:
- 1 spoon of Honey
- 1 spoon of Brown sugar
Mix this in a bowl and gently massage it into your lips for 15 seconds, leave on for one minute and wash off with a washcloth! Boom, now you have soft and healthy lips! Here is my blog post for more info on how to achieve soft and healthy lips!
5. Don’t Skip Out On Blush!
Blush is probably my favorite makeup product, it’s so good! I feel like people really underestimate the power of it too, it can make you look refreshed and energized! And this doesn’t mean applying tons and tons of blush onto your face, and a nice small amount can give you a great look!
If you like glowing makeup looks I would recommend the Benefit Galifornia Blush, and I am also going to recommend the Milani Bella Bellini Baking Blush since they are both so good!

I would say that this is a dupe for the Benefit Cosmetics Blush too!
6. Curling Your Lashes
I will admit I was pretty confused on how to get the perfect lash cur when beginning in makeup, well here’s how! Also, curl your lashes before mascara, this is so important. If you do it the other way around you could risk ripping out all of your lashes! I just wanted to add this since I’ve heard horror stories of people losing all of their lashes because they did it the other way around.
So, when curling your lashes hold the curler down on your lashes for 3-4 seconds then release. Repeat this 3-4 times and you will have flawless lashes!
If you are looking for a good lash curler this Brillant Beauty Curler is a great option!
7. Mascara
To add to the tip I gave you above, mascara! Over the past two years, I’ve had a love-hate relationship with mascara I’ve found ones that work really well like Maybelline Lash Sensational. I would say if you are a beginner this mascara is perfect, it’s cheap, it works, and your lashes will stay all day! It’s also got over 48,000 5 star ratings!

Here is the number one tip I recommend for getting long lashes with mascara: After curling your lashes don’t apply the mascara in a straight line, instead twirl the mascara wand up against your lashes and they will come out longer. Repeat this twice and your lashes will look significantly longer compared to running the wand in a straight line on your lashes!
8. Doing eye makeup before face makeup
I’ve heard people’s opinions on this tip but honestly, I think this is a personal preference! I would say if you are doing a minimal makeup look put concealer first then do your eye makeup. On the other hand, if you are doing a bold makeup look do your eye makeup then face makeup! I say this because of eyeshadow fallout and how that can mess up your face makeup, and then you might have to redo it all so it’s just a good tip to keep in mind!
9. Brows
Brows, recently I started filling mine in with a mix of brown and black eyeshadow. Here are a few tips for filling them in! I would say it’s a process to get good-looking brows, the first time I filled them in way too much and it looked weird. This is why I will say less is more when it comes to brows!
- Get a eyebrow brush and comb them without any makeup.
- Then get your eyeshadow and get the lighter color, you can also mix them! (ex. I have black brows but I mix dark brown and black so then the color isnt to dark for them!)
- As you apply act as if you are drawing brow hairs on and brush through your brows.
- Reapply and brush apply and brush etc.
- When you think you should add just a tiny bit more stop! I made that mistake too, it won’t look good if you keep applying the color.
- The last step is to apply clear brow gel! Clear is better if you do it this way since we just added color to brows and don’t want to over do it.
10. Use Eyeshadow As Eyeliner!
Now, I discovered this about 6 months when I was playing around with makeup, and omg it’s been a lifesaver! I’m still not mastered in the art of eyeliner so this tip is great for beginners!
- Grab a really dark black eyeshadow and a really percise and small makeup brush I’ll put a cheap one after the steps!
- Cover the brush in eyeshadow, don’t hold back on this! To make sure you dont get fallout in your eyes than hit the brush against the eyeshadow pallete to realease any one that.
- Now that you have your brush I want you to get close to a mirror, I like to use one of those magnifying mirrors!
- Apply the eyeshadow along your waterline, make sure to go slow and take your time so it can look good!
- When going on top of your eyelid reapply the eyeshadow and bascially go right on top of your lashes.
- Repeat two more times and it should be good and the eyeshadow should be looking really dark!
